Bluecrop Blueberry Bush Description

The Bluecrop blueberry bush is a fast-growing, hardy plant with a slightly upright habit. Bluecrop blueberry bushes produce masses of large, pale blue fruits with a good flavour that can be eaten fresh from the tree or used for culinary purposes to bake tasty treats, such as blueberry muffins. Considered a super food, the blueberry is packed with vitamin C and dietary fibre. This blueberry plant will provide attractive spring flowers shaped like tiny bells and vibrant red autumn colour. Bluecrop blueberry bushes are self fertile, so only one plant is required to achieve fruit, although, in a pair of two different varieties, it will produce better crops.

Planting Blueberries

Full sun is preferred but partial shade will be tolerated. Choose a position that is out of strong winds where possible. Ideally blueberries need to planted in containers to achieve the high level of acidity that they require. Use an ericaceous compost and follow our guide to planting trees into containers. Water in, ideally using rainwater. If your soil is very acidic then dig a 2 foot square area removing all weeds. Spread a bucket full of compost or well rotted manure into the planting area and fork it in, loosening the soil in the bottom of the trench. Once the soil in the trench is reconsolidated you can add some Growmore, sprinkled over the surface. Plant to the same level as the top of the soil of the rootmass. Backfill the hole and tamp down gently. Water in, ideally using rainwater. Initial pruning - No initial pruning is required.

Picking & Storage of blueberries

Pick when fully coloured, taking a full cluster rather than individual berries. You may have to go over the bush several times. Store in the fridge for 2 or 3 weeks or eat fresh, freeze or use in pies, muffins and jams.

Feeding & Mulching blueberries

Apply a general fertiliser such as Growmore or a fertiliser for acid loving plants around each plant in March. Mulch with peat or another acidic mulching agent in spring.

Seasonal Care of blueberries

Keep weeds at bay by hand pulling. During any summer long, hot, dry spells water well (ideally with rainwater), especially as the fruit begins to swell. Net your plants to protect from birds when the fruit is ripening if not in a fruit cage.

Pruning blueberries

In November - March cut out any dead or diseased branches. Also cut out a few older branches that have borne fruit.

Bare root and rootballed trees can only be dispatched from November - March. Pre-order is often advisable.
